현대 영화는 인생의 한계와 가능성을 묘사한다는 면에서 동시대의 영화들은 신학적 반영으로 우리를 초대합니다. 본 코스는,
1) 몇몇 선택된 최근의 한국과 서양 영화를 보고 토론하는 것을 포함할 것이며
2) 학생들로 하여금 영화를 비평적으로 해석할 수 있는 기술을 제공하는 데 도움을 주고
3) 영화에 대한 다양한 신학적 접근들을 연구하여 성경과 영화를 상호간 풍성한 대화의 장으로 이끌어 낼 것입니다.
***By portraying life in its possibility and limitation, contemporary film invites theological reflection. This course will (1) view and discuss selected recent films, (2) provide the student critical skills helpful for film interpretation, and (3) explore possible theological approaches to film criticism, concentrating upon how the Bible and film might be brought into mutually enriching dialogue.

5) 기독교인의 제자도나 사역에 있어서 영화를 사용하는 부분을 고려할 것입니다.
Students will be given the opportunity to develop tools to: (1) describe and assess contemporary trends both in Korea and in the West as embodied in the media; (2) engage appreciatively and critically in film interpretation; (3) explore possible theological and biblical approaches to our contemporary culture; (4) articulate something of the presence and purposes of God in human culture; and (5) consider their own use of film in their Christian discipleship and ministry.
3. 과목의 형태와 구성 (Course Format)

****The course is a ten week course that begins with pre-reading and viewing; then a 15 day hybrid class which alternates one day of synchronous (live) instruction with one day of a-synchronous instruction that will involve a combination of reading, viewing, and listening to pre-recorded lectures. The live (synchronous) sessions will include biblical reflections, lectures, discussion of the movies viewed, and class interaction. During the live (synchronous) sessions, students will typically (1) discuss the movies assigned for that day, (2) consider aspects of the nature of film and/or theology, (3) practice the use of a selected critical approach to film, and (4) enter into theological criticism with the film(s).

***Students are expected to view five of the required films (Gwoemul, Tae Guk Gi, Burning, Si, Milyang) prior to the start of the class on February 22. A sixth Korean film, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… Spring will be watched during an a-synchronous session of the class. These films are easily available on streaming services, DVD, etc. It is up to the students to obtain copies of these films. Other films (Decalogue 1, Ikiru, and Departures will be made available to the students for viewing during the a-synchronous class sessions. The tenth movie, Parasite, will be viewed as part of the final assignment and is the responsibility of the students to obtain,
Students must watch all the movies prior to their discussion in class. After viewing each movie, students should spend at least 30 minutes journaling at least 250 words about the movie. The notes you might take on the movie’s plot while watching it (something I do not strongly support) are not equivalent to the journal entry. The journal is meant to be your beginning reflections after you have seen the whole movie. Your journal notes should reflect your own viewing of the films. No
outside research is necessary. What did you notice that seemed important? What
was the larger meaning or theme? How does it fit in the Korean culture? What moved you? If it is possible to view the films with others and dialogue with them about the movies, this will enhance your learning.
Journals will be due on March 8, 2021. NOTE: Students should be sure to mark in their journals the date they watched the movie. Grading will reflect effort—i.e., if all the movies are seen prior to the class discussion and if a journal entry is recorded for each movie, you will get the maximum number of points. Missing entries and/or late viewing will result in the lowering of this grade.

A four-page, double-spaced report on the ministry assignment related to one chapter in the book Finding God in the Movies. Pick a movie from one chapter (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, X-Men, Tender Mercies, Signs, The Year of Living
Dangerously, The Iron Giant) and use the chapter’s resources to help you lead a
ministry event of your choosing and design. (Not all of these movies might be available to you, but some will, and all the chapters will give you examples of how you can lead your discussion.) We will discuss this assignment in class. Do not do this assignment prior to our synchronous classes.
NOTE: Do not slavishly use the questions, etc. They are meant as background and resource so you can develop your own approach.) Write one page explaining in detail the set-up for the event (intended purpose, what, who, when, where); two pages describing the outcome of your event (level of involvement, comments, participants reactions); and a final page on how you found the chapter’s resources helpful or lacking for your ministry event. Note: if you cannot locate any of the movies discussed in the chapters, you can also pick a movie of your choice (for example, Snowpiercer or My Sassy Girl), but you will then need to prepare resources on your own to lead the discussion. NOTE WELL: Do not use one of the movies we have viewed and discussed in class. (30% of grade)

This paper will integrate what you have learned in class and should be written after
the class sessions are over on March 8th.. The nature of the paper will be discussed in class. How might the movie Parasite have been used as the basis for an additional chapter in Useless Beauty furthering a two-way dialogue between the film and the book of Ecclesiastes?
After unpacking the center of power and meaning of the movie using methods and some of the questions used in class, you are to bring the movie into dialogue with the book of Ecclesiastes. (Don’t merely proof text. What themes/theology/concerns resonate between the film and this biblical book? Look for larger themes, as well as individual verses.) In writing your paper, (1) make use of at least three of the critical approaches to film discussed in class, outlined on the worksheet, or discussed in my book to help unpack the movie; (2) discuss briefly but fully your own methodological understanding as to how and why Bible and film can be brought together; and (3) show the critical interaction between the movie chosen and the book of Ecclesiastes. 7. 숙지해야 할 규정 (Policies):
a. 학문적 정직성 (Academic Integrity):
“이 코스를 시작하면서 우리는 교수와 학생으로서 크리스천의 인격이 반영되는 한 영역으로서의 우리의 학문적 작업에서 나무랄 데 없는 인격이 되기로 다짐한 우리의 서약을 한 번 더 다짐하고자 합니다. 우리는 우리의 모든 학문적 작업에서 정직할 것을 서약합니다. 우리는 성적이나 학위 혹은 책 출판보다 지적인 헌신과 개인적인 신실성을 더욱 중요하게 여기는 공동체를 세우기 위해 힘쓸 것입니다.”
At the beginning of this course we, as faculty and students, reaffirm our commitment to be beyond reproach in our academic work as a reflection of Christian character. We commit to honesty in all aspects of our work. We seek to establish a community which values serious intellectual engagement and personal faithfulness more highly than grades, degrees, or publications.
학생들 각 개인은 Portico account 에 링크되어 있는 You Quote It, You Note It 이라는 온라인 튜토리얼을 이수하여야 합니다. 이 튜토리얼은 모든 과목을 위해 한번만 하시면
됩니다. 학생들은 또한 마땅히 학생 핸드북과 신학교 카탈로그에 명기되어 있는 학문적
정직성에 대한 서약을 수시로 점검하고 이해해야 합니다. 서약을 위반할 경우 개인적으로 그에 상응하는 처벌과 교정 상담을 받게 될 수 있습니다. 특별히 다음과 같은 위반 사항들은 공식적으로 엄격하게 다루어질 것입니다.
❑ 한 코스에서 사용했던 똑같은 페이퍼의 전체 혹은 부분을 해당 교수(들)의 허락 없이 또 다른 코스에 제출하는 경우.
❑ 다른 출처에서 얻은 페이퍼(들)을 자신의 것으로 제출하는 경우.
❑ 표절, 즉 출판된 자료들이나 미출판된 혹은 전자문서 자료들로부터 인용부호를 달거나 그 자료들에서 얻은 아이디어를 자신이 이해한 대로 바꾸어 표현하지 않은 채 그대로 페이퍼에 베껴 적는 경우.
❑ 과제물을 준비함에 있어 교수의 허락 없이 협력 작업을 할 경우.
❑ 시험에서 부정행위를 하는 경우.
❑ 페이퍼를 쓰거나 시험을 치를 때 다른 학생을 도와줌으로 정직성 서약을 위반하는 경우.
상기의 위반이 적발될 시에는 해당 과제에 대해 낙제 점수(F)를 받게 될 것이며, 더 나아가 해당 과목에 대해서도 낙제 점수를 받게 될 수도 있습니다. 그리고 그 위반 사항은 학문적 정직성 위원회에 보고되어, 학문적 정직성에 대한 학칙에 따라 추가적인 제재 조치가 내려질 수 있습니다. 만일 위반 사항들을 거듭 되풀이했다는 증거가 포착될 경우에는 정식 징계 절차로 넘겨지게 될 것입니다. 이와 관련하여 문의를 원하시면 학문적정직성 위원회 의장에게, aic-chair@fuller.edu 로 이메일을 보내시면 됩니다.
