Fuller Theological Seminary’s position on misunderstandings surrounding recent AP news article

Since 1947 Fuller Seminary has been established as a diverse multi-denominational evangelical seminary, and has produced many Korean ministers, missionaries, lay leaders and theologians. Fuller’s Korean alumni are currently working in a myriad of ministry capacities in South Korea, North America, and in nations around the world to engage in global mission and to build healthy churches. As a very close partner of Korean churches and its pastors, missionaries, and lay leaders, Fuller Seminary continues to provide high quality education and training in theology, world mission, and psychological counseling.

On July 13, 2013 an intern at the Associated Press wrote an article about a Fuller Seminary student group called One Table, which led to the publication of numerous related articles in Korean language media that have caused many people to be concerned and suspicious of Fuller. We deeply regret the anxiety this article has caused for our current students and alumni, as well as the many church leaders and members who care for and support Fuller. To summarize the situation, the AP article’s title and content are inaccurate regarding Fuller Seminary’s position on homosexuality and the true nature of the One Table student group. This has led to unnecessary misunderstandings and speculation. The two core misunderstandings are: 1) The One Table student group at Fuller is mainly composed of students identifying as homosexual, and 2) Fuller has officially approved of a gay and lesbian group to discuss homosexuality issues.

Fuller Seminary would like to address these misunderstandings and confirm the true facts about the school’s policy and position in this matter.

Fuller Seminary’s position on homosexuality

Fuller Theological Seminary’s position on homosexuality is clearly outlined in its Community Standards (http://www.fuller.edu/about-fuller/mission-and-history/community-standards.aspx), which states that marriage was created by God as a covenant between one man and one woman (Genesis 1:26-27; Mark 10:6-9), and any sexual activity outside of marriage goes against the teachings of the Bible. Therefore, homosexual activity and same-sex marriage is contrary to Fuller Seminary’s policy. All students and faculty must adhere to the Community Standards. If it is confirmed that a student or member of the faculty does not adhere to this policy, then according to the Community Standards measures will be taken which could lead to dismissal.

The nature and purpose of the seminary’s approval of One Table

The Associated Press article introduced One Table as an LGBT group composed of students identifying as homosexual. This is absolutely not accurate. This group is one of 24 student groups that were allowed to form in order to freely discuss theological, ethical, and pastoral views on diverse subjects that arise in present-day society, including issues about sexuality and homosexuality. Fuller Seminary allowed this student group to form with the understanding that in today’s ministry students are being confronted by topics of sexuality and homosexuality. It is hoped that this discussion group will help students to think about these issues from both a biblical and pastoral perspective.

As we all know, today’s families, churches, and society are facing many issues surrounding sexuality and homosexuality. When we consider that such issues, including pre-marital sex, cohabitation, adultery, divorce, sex addiction, and homosexuality exist, it follows that there needs to be thinking and discussion on these topics in seminaries. To state clearly, the One Table student group is an academic group to discuss the diverse issues surrounding sexuality. It is not a political organization to support homosexual activity or same-sex marriage.

What is regrettable is that the One Table group’s website contained content that raised unintended misunderstandings. Some content on One Table’s website included material that conflicted with the seminary’s guidelines. The individual opinions of some students were expressed as if they represented the position of the whole group. To be clear, One Table is not to be an advocacy group against Fuller’s Community Standards. While addressing some of the misunderstandings surrounding the AP article, the seminary discovered these issues that are in conflict, and is working with One Table to ensure that its activities adhere to Fuller’s guidelines and Community Standards.

Fuller is thankful for the patience of the many pastors and church members who trust in and pray for the seminary. If you have any remaining questions or need to confirm any details, please call or write to the seminary. Furthermore, please know that there was a delay in our response as we worked to provide an accurate and responsible explanation. In order to honor your prayers and support, all of Fuller’s professors and staff members will be working very hard.
