1. 강의 개요 (Course Description)

현대 영화는 인생의 한계와 가능성을 묘사한다는 면에서 신학적으로 심사숙고하는 일이 필요하다. 본 강의는, 1) 몇몇 선택된 한국과 서양 영화를 보고 토론하는 것을 포함하며

2) 학생들이 영화를 비평적으로 해석할 수 있는 기술을 제공하는 데 도움을 주고 3) 영화에 대한 다양한 신학적 접근들을 연구하여 성경과 영화를 상호간 풍성한 대화의 장으로 이끌어 낼 것이다.

 

By portraying life in its possibility and limitation, contemporary film invites theological reflection. This course will (1) view and discuss selected recent films, both Korean and Western, (2) provide the student critical skills helpful for film interpretation, and (3) explore possible theological approaches to film criticism, concentrating upon how the Bible and film might be brought into mutually enriching dialogue.

 

2. 강의 학습 목표 (Learning Outcomes)

이 과목을 성공적으로 이수할 경우, 학생들은 다음과 같은 능력을 갖추게 된다.

1) 최근 미디어와 관련된 한국 그리고 서양의 최근 경향들을 접하고 분석할 수 있는

    도구들을 발전시킬 기회를 가질 수 있을 것이며

2) 영화를 즐기면서 동시에 비평적으로 해설할 수 있고

3) 현대 문화에 대한 다양한 신학적이고 성경적인 접근들을 연구할 것이며

4) 인간의 문화 가운데 하나님의 목적과 임재가 어떻게 연계되었는지 살피고

5) 기독교인의 제자도나 사역에 있어서 영화를 사용하는 부분을 고려할 것이다.

 

Students will be given the opportunity to develop tools to: (1) describe and assess contemporary trends both in Korea and in the West as embodied in the media; (2) engage appreciatively and critically in film interpretation; (3) explore possible theological and biblical approaches to our contemporary culture; (4) articulate something of the presence and purposes of God in human culture; and (5) consider their own use of film in their Christian discipleship and ministry.

 

3. 강의 구성 (Course Format)

본 강의는 수업 전에 이루어지는 사전 학습(독서와 영화관람), 3시간씩 7번 진행되는 실시간 온라인 강의와 6번의 비실시간 온라인 동영상 강의로 15일간 진행되는 집중 온라인 강의, 그리고 이론과 실천을 겸비한 강의 후 과제들로 구성된 10주 온라인 블랜디드 강의이다.

 

온라인 실시간 줌 강의는 2월 22, 24, 26, 3월 1, 3, 5, 8일 미국 서부 시간 오후 2-5시 (한국 오전 7-10시)까지 진행된다.

 

실시간 온라인 강의가 진행되는 동안 학생들은 보통 1) 그 날 배정된 영화에 대해 토론하고, (2) 영화 및/또는 신학의 본질적인 측면들을 고려하며, (3) 영화 비평을 위한 선별된 비평적 접근법 사용을 연습하고, (4) 영화에 대한 신학적 대화를 시작하게 된다. 또한, 각 비실시간 온라인 강의가 진행되는 동안 학생들은 강의를 듣고, 영화를 보고, 성경을 읽고, 영화에 대한 비평적 글을 쓰게 된다.

 

The course is a ten-week hybrid course with pre-readings and viewings, a fifteen-day intensive class period making use of six a-synchronous sessions and seven three-hour synchronous sessions followed by several post-class assignments, both practical and theoretical. During each synchronous class session, students will typically (1) discuss the movies assigned for that day, (2) consider aspects of the nature of film and/or theology, (3) practice the use of selected critical approaches to film, and (4) enter into theological dialogue with the film(s). During each a-synchronous class session, students will listen to lectures, view films, read Scripture, and journal on films

6. 과제물 및 평가 (Assignments)

(1) 강의 시간. 학생들은 줌으로 진행되는 실시간 온라인 강의들과 캔버스에서 진행되는 비실시간 온라인 동영상 강의들에 모두 참여해야 한다.

     Instruction time. Students are expected to attend all synchronous classes on zoom and to complete the learning experiences through Canvas in the a-synchronous sessions.

 

(2) 모든 필독도서는 반드시 독서할 것. [학습목표 (1)-(5)과 관련] 2권의 책, 영화와 영성과 허무한 아름다움은 2021년 2월 22일까지 독서할 것. 독서한 필독 도서 리스트 제출. Completion of the required reading. (3) 2권의 책, 영화와 영성과 허무한 아름다움 독서비평보고서를 2021년 2월 22일까지 제출 (20%, 각 비평보고서는 4 학점: 500 words 단어; 8 학점: 1,000 words 단어) [학습목표 (1), (3)와 관련]  Write two book reviews (4 units: 500 words each; 8 units: 1200 words each) on Reel Spirituality and on Useless Beauty (Due on February 22, 2021, 20% of grade) [These assignments are related to learning outcomes #1,3].

 

     주의 사항: “영화와 영성” 독서비평보고서에 토론을 위해 중요하다고 생각하는 세 가지 토론 질문을 포함시킬 것. 토론 질문을 만들 때 책의 핵심적인 부분이나 중요한 부분을 다룰 것. 책의 결론에 동의하지 않아도 되고, 책의 약점에 대해 나누고, 책의 핵심적인 부분을 명확히 나누며, 토론의 범위를 넓히기 위해 자유롭게 토론할 것. 답을 아는 질문을 하지 말 것. 아마 모두가 그 답을 알고 있을 것이다. 

NOTE: Later in the class, you will also be asked to write three questions stemming from your reading of Reel Spirituality which you think are important for the class to spend time discussing. Please ask questions that are important and interesting to you and central to the book. Feel free to challenge conclusions, to ask about weaknesses, to seek clarification of central points, to extend the discussion beyond what is covered. Don’t ask a question to which you know the answer. Probably everyone else does too!

 

 

 

(4) 영화 관람 보고서 (4/8 unit 공통): 9 개의 필수 관람 영화를 관람하고 각 영화에 대한 감상문(독서보고서 형식으로, 250 단어) [학습목표 (2)와 관련] / Viewing and journaling on required movies. (250 words) (10% of grade) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #2]

 

학생들이 5편의 영화(괴물, 태극기, 버닝, Shi, 밀양)를 강의 전에 시청한 것을 전제로 하고 강의가 진행될 것이다. 다른 4편의 영화(Dekalog 1, About Schmidt, The Adjustment Bureau, and Okuribito)는 강의가 진행되는 15일 동안 시청하게 될 것이다. 학생들은 모든 영화들을 실시간 온라인 강의 전에 토론을 위해 먼저 시청해야 한다. 정해진 강의 시간에 영화를 시청한 후, 학생들은 적어도 250자의 저널을 약 30분 동안 써야 한다. 영화를 시청하면서 줄거리 가운데 얻은 노트들(나는 강력하게 추천하지 않는다)은 저널 쓰는 것과 다른 것이다. 저널은 영화를 모두 시청한 후 학생이 쓰게 되는 첫 성찰이다. 저널 노트들은 영화를 시청하는 학생 자신의 시각이 반영되어야 한다. 영화에서 눈에 띄었던 것은 무엇인가? 영화에서 중요했다고 생각하는 것이 무엇인가? 혼란스러웠던 부분은 어디인가? 외부 연구 자료는 필요하지 않다. 다른 학생들과 영화를 시청하고 토론할 수 있다면 학생들은 많은 것을 배울 수 있게 될 것이다.

 

저널은 2021년 3월 8일까지 제출해야 한다. 학생들은 영화를 시청한 날짜를 저널에 반드시 기재해야 한다. 성적은 학생의 노력을 반영한다. 모든 영화가 강의 시간의 토론 전에 시청되고 각 영화에 대한 저널이 완성될 경우. 저널이 누락되거나 영화를 늦게 시청하게 되면 성적이 낮아지는 결과를 초래하게 된다.

 

     Students are expected to view five of the required films prior to the start of class (Gwoemul, Taegukgi, Beoning, Shi, Milyang). Another four films (Dekalog 1, About Schmidt, The Adjustment Bureau, and Okuribito) will be screened during the fifteen days of class.  Students must view all these movies prior to the synchronous class where they are discussed. After viewing the movie(s) for a particular class session, students should spend at least 30 minutes journaling at least 250 words about the movie(s). The notes you might take on the movie’s plot while watching it (something I do not strongly support) are not equivalent to the journal entry. The journal is meant to be your beginning reflections after you have seen the whole movie. Your journal notes should reflect your own viewing of the films. What stood out to you about the movie? What was significant? What was confusing? No outside research is necessary. If it is possible to view the films with others and dialogue with them about the movies, this will enhance your learning.

 

     Journals will be due on March 8, 2021. Students should be sure to mark in their journals the date they watched the movie. Grading will reflect effort—i.e., if all the movies are seen prior to the class discussion and if a journal entry is recorded for each movie. Missing entries and/or late viewing will result in the lowering of this grade.

 

(5) 영화를 사용한 사역 계획서 (4/8 unit 공통) (4 page, 30%) [학습목표 (2)-(5)와 관련]

     4 page report on ministry project using film to lead a discussion group (use readings from Finding God in the Movies for ideas, and/or pick a movie of your choice) (30%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #2-5]

 

책 ‘Finding God in the Movies’의 한 장과 관련하여 4 페이지의 사역계획서를 제출해 야 한다(Double-spaced). 책의 목록 중 한 장에서 영화를 선택하고, 그 장의 내용을 사용하면 여러분이 하려고 하는 사역 계획에 도움이 될 것이다. 강의시간에 이 과제에 대해 논의할 것이다. 실시간 온라인 집중 강의 시작 전에 이 과제를 하지 말 것.

A four-page, double-spaced report on the ministry assignment related to one chapter in the book Finding God in the Movies. Pick a movie from one chapter and use the chapter’s resources to help you lead a ministry event of your choosing and design, or choose a Korean language film not discussed in class. We will discuss this assignment in class. Do not do this assignment prior to our synchronous class instruction.

 

주의 사항: 만약 당신이 이 책에서 논의된 영어로 된 영화들 중 하나를 사용한다면, 독창성 없는 질문등을 하지 말라. 그 영화들은 당신만의 접근법을 개발할 수 있는 자원과 배경이다. 4쪽 분량의 과제는 사역 설정(의도된 목적, 무엇, 누가, 언제, 어디서)에 도움이 되는 구체적인 설명 1쪽, 사역의 결과를 설명하는 2쪽(참여 수준, 의견들, 참가자 반응들), 그리고 선택한 책의 장 안에 있는 자료가 어떻게 목회 사역에 도움이 되는지, 혹은 부족하다고 판단되는지, 혹은 어떻게 목회 사역을 이끌 것인지에 대한 준비에 대한 설명 1쪽으로 구성된다. 원하는 영화를 선택할 수 있지만, 그런 다음 스스로 자료들을 준비하여 토론을 이끌어야 한다. 수업 시간에 보고 토론한 영화 중 하나를 사용하지 말 것. (30%)

 

NOTE: If you are using one of the English language movies discussed in the book, do not slavishly use the questions, etc. They are meant as background and resource so you can develop your own approach.) For your four-page paper, write one page explaining in detail the set-up for the event (intended purpose, what, who, when, where); two pages describing

 

the outcome of your event (level of involvement, comments, participants reactions); and a final page either on how you found the chapter’s resources helpful or lacking for your ministry event, or how you prepared for leading your ministry event. Note: you can pick a movie of your choice, but you will then need to prepare resources on your own to lead the discussion. Do not use one of the movies we have viewed and discussed in class. (30% of grade)

 

(6) 아카데미 상을 받은 기생충 영화를 시청 후 전도서를 적용하여 감상과 비평 보고서 제출 (4 units: 10-12 pages; 8 units: 15-20 pages) 강의 시간에 이 과제에 대한 자세한 정보가 논의될 것이다. 실시간 온라인 집중 강의가 마무리되기 전에 이 과제를 시작하지 말 것 [학습목표 (2)-(5)와 관련, 40%]

A paper putting Ecclesiastes in dialogue with the Academy Award winning film Parasite. How to write this paper will be discussed in class, and the assignment should not be begun until after the synchronous class sessions are over (40%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #2-5]

 

이 과제는 여러분이 강의에서 배운 것을 통합시켜 줄 것이다. 영화의 핵심과 의미를 해석한 뒤, 전도서와 영화를 대화의 장으로 이끌어내야 한다 (전도서 내용을 증명하려고 하지 말라. 영화와 전도서 사이에 어떤 연관된 주제들, 신학들, 관련사항들이 있는가?

단순히 관련된 성경 구절을 찾지 말고 더 큰 주제를 찾을 것). 비평 보고서에는, 1) 강의 혹은 나의 책에서 논의된 영화에 대한 비평적 접근법을 적어도 세 가지를 사용하여 영화를 해석해야 하며 2) 어떻게 그리고 왜 성경과 영화가 함께 통합될 수 있는지에 대한 자신의 방법론적 이해를 간략하지만 명확하게 설명해야 하고, 3) 선택한 영화와 전도서 사이의 비평적 상호작용을 보여주어야 한다. 이 세 가지를 모두 보고서에 훌륭하게 다루어야 A 학점을 받을 수 있다.

The paper will allow you to integrate what you have learned in class. After unpacking the center of power and meaning of the movie, you are to bring the movie into dialogue with the book of Ecclesiastes. (Don’t merely proof text. What themes/theology/concerns resonate between the film and this biblical book? Look for larger themes, not just individual verses.) In writing your paper, (1) make use of at least three of the critical approaches to film discussed in class or in my book to help unpack the movie; (2) discuss briefly but fully your own understanding as to how and why Bible and film can be brought together; and (3) show the critical interaction between the movie chosen and the book of Ecclesiastes. Again, all three aspects must be discussed with excellence in order to receive an “A.” (40% of grade)

     학생들 각 개인은 Portico account 에 링크되어 있는 You Quote It, You Note It 이라는 온라인 튜토리얼을 이수하여야 합니다. 이 튜토리얼은 모든 과목을 위해 한번만 하시면 됩니다. 학생들은 또한 마땅히 학생 핸드북과 신학교 카탈로그에 명기되어 있는 학문적 정직성에 대한 서약을 수시로 점검하고 이해해야 합니다. 서약을 위반할 경우 개인적으로 그에 상응하는 처벌과 교정 상담을 받게 될 수 있습니다. 특별히 다음과 같은 위반 사항들은 공식적으로 엄격하게 다루어질 것입니다.
